As regular customers at the old Wanamaker’s, my mother and I went downtown to view as much as we could of FDNY activity. There was so much water poured into the fire that it went into the IRT subway undermining the roadbed causing it to sink I believe about 6 ft. The roadbed on tk 1 was completely replaced by a modified type II but with all ties going completely across and no trough between the rails. As a historical note, the Wanamaker store had a monorail kiddie ride that ran along the periphery of the mezzanine giving the children a view of the main floor. |
