When did they stop dropping QBs? When I was a T/D the rule was QBs (and also RR/Nassaus) were NOT to be dropped. If a QB went bad on the stand, the signs on a QJ (and later the M) were to be changed to QB, the QB would operate and the QJ (or M) would be dropped. The so called premium service was always to run. Back in June of 1969, when I had been a road M/M for about a week, I made a midnight trip on a 4 car AA. After lunch, I was assigned a student for my next trip which was a B to Stl. Fortunately from being a railfan, I knew the line about as well as someone who had been on the job longer so it wasn’t a problem. However If I hadn’t had prior knowledge and was only able to instruct base on the skimpy break in time I actually had, The student would have been severely deprived. As it turned out, on my return trip to 168 St, my train got turned back south at Pacific St and my student had to deadhead to 168 St to break in on a AA trip. I recommended that he contact the training school to let them know that he still needed to finish breaking in on the rest of the B. If the training was that bad back then, I cant imagine how it is now if the old timers say it’s worse now.
