There was no room to lengthen those South Ferry platforms, unless you removed the connecting track. A hush-hush agreement between the City and the Manhattan Elevated Rwy in the 1880's, was exposed by yellow journalists in the newspapers. A portion of Battery Park, just west of the station, would have been given to the MER for east and west side loops. |
