"Bowling Green, for example, has an exit straight up, and also the down, across, and up option."Except in the case of Bowling Green the lower level mezzanine and separate uptown platfrom was ADDED during the mid-1970's renovation of the entire station. These items were not in the original plans of the station. The original Times Square station (now the Times Square Shuttle platform) had direct entrances to local buildings. The original Astor Place local station also had (and still has) direct entrances to a department store, as well as an under-platform passageway between the local platforms - closed in the late 1970's with the renovation of the station.
