They were already bad by the late 1960s/early 70s Wow- what lemons they must've been. The R-16's were built by the American Car and Foundry Company which for many years was the premier car building for New York City subway cars. The R-16's were followed by the R-26 and R-28 car classes which gave good and dependable service and lasted into the early 2000's. They even made it into the stored Redbird fraternity. After years of building so many good and reliable trains its odd that the R-16's would be such lemons but there were problems from the very first including their inability to deal with snowstorms and cold weather here in New York. (Did the builders think that the cars were going to Miami?). But then Ford did build the Edsel. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
