Bill, much thanks to your friend for the explanation. I too was a victim of the R16s when they were used on the GG/EE trains from 1969 to 1973, during the time I was going from Queens to Brooklyn to attend Brooklyn Technical High School.

Some of the old girls barely had enough oomph to move at any decent speed, even with the controller wrapped up for full speed (I liked riding in the front car as you can guess), and especially in the under water tunnel between 21st/Van Alst and Greenpoint Ave stations. The fact that I made it in to school on time day in and day out (and not late) was a minor miracle in itself.
