They will survive because their MultiLevel commuter car isn't just the best bilevel for Penn Station/Grand Central, but also the only one, and BBD owns the design. MNRR/LIRR are going to have a big joint order in the near future. It would be difficult for another manufacturer to underbid them since a new design would need to be developed. There will also likely be a NYS requirement for the purchase, which means another mfgr would need to build a new plant in NY and work that cost into the contract.They also should have no trouble filling the order on time since they would just need to stamp out more of what they have already made close to a thousand times for NJT, MARC and AMT. It's a shame they were barred from the R211 contract, their Movia product (Aka Toronto Rocket) could have been a drop in adaptation for the open gangway variant. |
