You know why there were two tunnels (rather than tubes), right?Because the other trains were going to Exchange Place. For fifty years after NYP opened. Four tracks that split into two sets of two in Kearny. One option had zero tunnels under the Hudson, and the railroad splitting off from the original New Jersey RR main line at Rahway to cross Staten Island and the Narrows into Brooklyn and Queens, then entering Manhattan via the LIRR tunnels. Imagine GG1s running through Staten Island, eh? |
