They can accomplish it with bigger planes, but not too big. The low hanging fruit is replacing the regional jets (unless they can squeeze a small runway for them in there somewhere) with mainline aircraft.

Then there's the already popular flights. Boeing is rumored to be restarting their 767 passenger line. The 767 fits the niche between the largest 737 and A321, and the smallest 787 / A330. The engines aren't ginormous so they don't take up more slots than single aisle planes.

If the domestic airlines make these aircraft changes, they can increase passenger counts at LGA without any need for infrastructure changes.
