If he knew there was a 30MPH curve (a big IF), but had no clue where it was, then dilly-dally along at say 50MPH. Better to be scolded for losing 5 more minutes. Maybe with so many dignitaries on board and being a half hour late due to mechanical issues (Charger and the P42 had trouble communicating), he was trying to hide the fact he didn't know what he was doing.
