Back when I first got my license, simulators were not required although I believe they did exist. The drivers here in NY had to pass a road test with a NYS DMV inspector in the vehicle and were required to demonstrate the proper use of hand signals, left and right turns, parallel parking and a K turn (referred to at the time as a “broken U turn”). Driving a short distance in heavy traffic was also required but as was mentioned by another poster, highway driving wasn’t even considered and If I recall, drivers on learner’s permits were not allowed on parkways or tother highways. |
