They do have demand for additional rush hour trains. What they have been lacking to meet that demand is:
1. Western terminal capacity, which ESA will help with
2. Insufficent main line trackage, which is partially being addressed
3. Insufficient parking. The surface lots in Ronkonkoma need to be replaced with a large parking garage, as do many other stations in electrified territory. There doesn't seem to be much planning going on for this - I think Mineola was the last garage LIRR opened, there need to be more further east.
