Actually when the Essex St master tower was installed, it was intended to break down the wall at the south (RR north) end of Canal St and have all 4 tks go through to Chambers St and completely realign the former H tracks into J1 and J3 tk into Canal. It was that way on the Essex model board for years until the current alignment was made. I remember years ago going to a GO meeting where one of the high ranking suits mentioned that the new MTA management imported from the "Toonerville Trolley” systems in other cities was thinking in terms of eliminating all switches and abandoning all trackage that didn’t see 24/7 use. As can bee seen, many of those proposals have ben implemented.
