I remember driving up to Syracuse (as it so happened the day after JFK got killed) in November 1963. You pretty much had to take the NY Thruway. I think Route 17 portions might have been a mess with traffic lights or was not all there, I don't know. The I-80/I-380 option to get to I-81 was not totally in tact at the time.
