Intercity buses really sucked before the Interstate Highway system was built. If you could possibly afford it, you took the train. Imagine going to Boston all the way on Route 1.

I still remember riding with my parents driving through Indianapolis in 1961 on the way to the southwest (I think St. Louis and Columbus already had some kind of halfway decent bypass but there was no way to get around or through Indianapolis except straight through the city). Miserable!
