yield management. the persons who created that vision have a special seat in hell if there is any justice.

And,yes you are correct about the speed isue. If memory serves, the Metroliner test record speed was 160.xx and Acelas managed 5 mph more in test. The vaunted 2 hr DC-NYC non stops never acheived reliable time keeping when they were Metroliners, and Acelas don't have a stellar OTP # either.

Sadly, despite the obvious high discretionary earnings of the typical Acela rider (given ticket prices), Amtrak has yet to evolve the coffee/p[astry offerings to the Peets/Starbucks/Au Bon Pain level of quality. Unimaginative desk jockeys !
