The 6th Avenue route was very expensive to build due to its location especially in the 14th-42nd St. areas where it had to pass under (or over) several other subway and railroad lines plus the PATH and one of the city's water tunnels. In addition there was an elevated line on 6th Ave. until 1938 when it was torn down and streetcars at the surface level.
