I'm wondering if, in 1880, upper Second Avenue was as empty as Washington Heights/Inwood was when the IRT opened there in 1907 or so? to what extent- I wouldn't doubt it was a significant extent- were the 2nd and 3rd Ave Elevateds responsible for the development of upper Manhattan?

Main: I believe that the upper East Side developed earlier than did the west side. Many hospitals built campuses there. This gave them access to the islands in the East River where those with communicable diseases were kept. There also was a great deal of manufacturing. Even before the General Slocum disaster the German American community had started to move uptown to Yorkville (86th Street). Along with them came the Deutsche Dispensary now know as Lenox Hill Hospital.

The Second Avenue El served as an adjunct to the 3rd Avenue El providing two more tracks. Basically there was a four elevated tracks between 125th Street and Chatham Square, this became a six tracks after the completion of the Dual Contracts. So there was a strong demand for service.
