A better question would be, why are some new systems (dare I say AirTrain) built from the start as automated operations?The PANYNJ could have chosen to go with a system using trains operates by humans (which I still think is inherently better, for a number of reasons). They didn't, because the PA didn't want to pay humans, or cover the costs of their benefits. That is the unfortunate reality of our century. I don't think everything should be done by robots, but corporations and city governments often think otherwise. |
