May 21, 1925: The Long Island Rail Road begins electric train service on its Montauk Branch between Jamaica and Babylon. Today the 13 stations from Rockville Centre to Babylon, inclusive, are the busiest LIRR branch.

May 22, 1967: Two New York Central RR freight trains collide head on at 147th Street in Manhattan. One track was out of service for repairs causing the remaining track to be used in both directions. Unfortunately signals and instructions did not function properly and six train crew members were killed (more were injured. This stretch of track is today's Amtrak Empire Line.
