I can understand people wouldn't want that sort of burning going on in the neighborhoods- for years. No way would something like that take place today. But you can be sure that if I'd been around, I'd have gone to see it. It must've been an added bonus that the workmen were accommodating.As for the NYWB itself, I agree that it's hard to believe that something so monumental, and well-built, from end-to-end, simply no longer exists (except for the Dyre segment). It was clearly better built than the LIRR mainline that people use today. And that (in my opinion) silly NIMBY opposition has so far, prevented from being improved. |
