A small number of G trains are running with new digital signs and equipment that will do diagnostics and monitor train car operations, the Daily News has learned.
The MTA recently installed the equipment, from China Railway Rolling Stock Corp., to test-drive its communication and train-monitoring devices on the model of car used on the G line, according to an internal MTA notice to train crews dated July 19.
Two passenger-information screens, similar to those used in newer model cars, will be installed in a total of four train cars used on the G.
The screens will show the line, date and time, and a scrolling message that says: “Thank you for riding with MTA New York City Transit!”
The equipment will be tested for about a year, according to the MTA document.
MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said the agency is testing signs and equipment from a subway car builder, and has no other plans to add the digital information displays to other trains.
