As far as I recall, the trolley stop on East Kingsbridge Road under the Concourse was westbound only. There was no platform. The car stopped, and the law was that autos had to stop 8 feet behind a streetcar discharging or receiving passengers. A passenger got off, hoped the vehicular traffic would stop, and crossed to the north sidewalk, entering the Independent mezzanine directly. Eastbounds did not stop under the Concourse, as there was a wall between the tracks.
---
A curve, still there, preceded the car stop for the subway, hiding the pedestrians from the view of drivers. I'm uncertain of this memory: at one time a photo-electric cell was mounted on the ceiling of the underpass near the westbound wire. The passing of the trolley pole would break the circuit, and a red traffic signal or some other warning would light.
---
Upon motorization in January, 1948, I believe eastbound Bx20 buses immediately began avoiding the underpass, using a bus stop at the southwest corner of the Concourse. I'm uncertain whether westbound buses for a while halted at the Independent entrance in the underpass.
