Uncle Larry, now that the coffee has hopefully kicked in, add these tidbits to the 6th Ave El: power shut down at 11:45PM and officially closed at 11:59PM, Dec 4th, 1938. On Dec 18th, 1938, after one day of demolition, the contractor, George T. Weisbaum, was disqualified due to being unable to post a performance bond. The runner-up, Harris Structural Steel of Plainfield, NJ (with a NYC office on 4th Ave) began demolition on Jan 3rd, 1939. They completed the job on April 8th, 1939.
The scrap iron/steel was sold by Harris to Bethlehem Steel in PA, where it was melted down. Despite the rumors, Bethlehem Steel also dealt with other scrap providers, so it was impossible to say what went to Japan.
