(instead of them standing there watching and not knowing how to stop it)One other option might be to install the kind of chain link barriers around the extenders as was done at the original South Ferry station. Perhaps installing a light above the extender that would be red at all times (plus some kind of "Danger, Gap" type of sign), except when the extender was in its proper open position against a stopped train, when the light would be green. Would immediately turn back to red, as soon as the doors had closed. I wonder how common this kind of accident has been at 14th st. - extenders have been there for decades - if it were chronic it might have been already addressed/remedied. It sounds as though being drunk, even if not over the legal limit, could have had a lot to do with this accident. |
