If I remember correctly, Hylan actually supported a Staten Island subway tunnel and put it up for bids. Not one contractor responded. Whether or not this was due to the deep work involved under the Narrows or Gov Al Smith's opposition, might never be known. Smith was in the pocket of the Pensy, and the railroad did not want to see the B&O's Richmond passenger service benefit from the tunnel. |
