"Second Ave. subway line needs to ramp up testing rapidly to open in December

To get riders on the Second Ave. subway on time, the MTA needs to ramp up the number of equipment tests ahead of the December opening, an independent engineer told the board Monday.

The megaproject¡¯s independent engineer, Kent Haggas, said the Metropolitan Transportation Authority needs to complete 300 tests on key equipment like fire alarms, radio communications and elevators ¡ª with only 12 weeks to go.

¡°That¡¯s an average of 25 a week,¡± Haggas said. ¡° You¡¯re at 10, so it¡¯s got to ramp up, as of last week.¡±
¡°This is our No. 1 concern,¡± he said.

MTA Chair Thomas Prendergast was still bullish on getting the first phase of the subway ¡ª four new stations on Second Ave. along an extended Q line, up to 96th St. ¡ª open by Dec. 31.

MTA board member Andrew Albert raised the possibility of pushing the start date back several weeks into 2017, but Prendergast was set to get the stations ready for riders this year.

¡°We¡¯re gonna keep the pressure on to get it done by Dec. 31,¡± Prendergast said.

There have been two stations giving construction crews problems .

At 72nd St., the MTA needs to finish installing escalators and elevators, then connect it to the fire alarm system, ¡°the last major activity of the project,¡± said Haggas.

Over at the 86th St. station, escalators and elevators need to fully installed and tested.
