Point was, not too many people were having to take the shuttle to the 4/5, unless they were going to one of the stops between Grand Central and 14th OR Spring or Bleecker, since the Broadway Line stop for 8th and Canal Street is one block west of the Lexington line and Prince, Cortlandt, Rector and Whitehall are all within reasonable walking distance of the Lexington Line (plus you can actually take the (1) to South Ferry and get the N/Q late nights at Whitehall as well). Only City Hall is not as close to the Brooklyn Bridge stop.

Point is, the shuttle running overnight was not necessary because there were sufficient alternate ways for people to get to the Lexington lines and/or stations near those on the Lexington lines without an extra transfer.
