It's causing a pretty big reduction in width on the up side and a slight reduction in width on the down side. Depending on your size, it may or not be a problem. I've been in a home where the handrail for the stairs is attached to a wall and tapers to a close before you reach the bottom step, you have to take your hand out of there or get it pinched.It falls into the s**t happens category.
