I am mentioning this because the Metro is being discussed. Why is the Metro's track gauge 4 feet 8 1/4 inches instead of standard gauge, which is 4 feet 8 1/2 inches?The wheel sets on the revenue rolling are gauged to 4' 8 1/2". It was done to increase stability and produce a smother ride. Back in the day it did just that. With the less then perfect track that is found throughout most of the railroad today it's nearly impossible to perceive difference. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |
