Relocating the cables would be required anyhow when replacing the older “slide” with a more up to date electric portion since the devices are actually quite different. On the steels, the contacts are on the bottom of the slide and when withdrawn, the slide makes a loop circuit with the base of the electric portion. When the slide is advanced, it inserts into the opposite drawhead and pushes the slide on the other car and mates with the contract on the base of the electric portion. Advancing the slide is not automatic and is accomplished my utilizing the “advance”position on the uncoupling valve. On the newer portions, the contacts are on the front of the electric portion and when the coupling is made, both portions advance automatically and the contacts meet each other face to face. That would mean that the cables to the couplers are in slightly different positions on the steels from where they are on the Ds and R-9s and the differences in the portions is also why the SI cars could not be coupled to the steels since the SIs had the more modern version of the electric portion. By the way, many of the BMT old timers referred to both types of electric portions as “slides”even though they were 2 different types.
