Transport body Centro has announced that a Midland Metro tram will carry the name of legendary Birmingham rock star Ozzy Osbourne.

The Black Sabbath singer will be in the city this Thursday to see the tram as final testing continues before the opening of the metro extension from Bull Street to New Street station.

The Aston-born frontman said: "It's a great honor to have a new tram named after me. I'm proud to be a Brummie, and this means so much."

Driver training started this week on the remaining part of the tram line which is yet to open, running between Bull Street and Stephenson Street outside the station entrance.

Transport body Centro announced last week that the remainder of the extension, which was originally due to open before Christmas, had been delayed again following problems with track alignment which had been discovered during testing.

Driver training is scheduled to take seven days and passenger services will begin once this is successfully completed.

In a separate announcement, the Department for Transport has given formal approval for the extension from Stephenson Street to Centenary Square via Victoria Square which is due for completion in 2019.

The first part of the £128 million ($188 million), 0.7-mile extension, which runs from Snow Hill station to Bull Street, opened in December.

Ozzy Osbourne is due to be at the new tram stop in Corporation Street at 11 am.
