He didn’t say they would absolutely have to share a truck, he said, ALMOST. Even though separate, the truck centers would have to be moved a bit closer to the ends of the cars in order to minimize the end excess on the cars.

Even that's not the case. The BR481/482 pairs on the Berlin S-bahn have the truck center 2.8 meters back from the car end. That's a greater distance between truck center and car end than on previous models, which usually ranged between 2.5 and 2.6 meters.

The same is true of Toronto's Rockets, and pretty much all metro cars based on Bombardier's Movia platform, including London's S-stock. The truck on the TTC Rocket appears to be 10'6" from the car end, while that same distance is 10'4" on the T1 cars.

I'm sure there are cases where the truck centers do move closer to the end of the car when one generation of rolling stock is replaced by another with full gangways, but clearly that is not a requirement.
