Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Sun Feb 14 11:40:29 2016 Tuscarora Almanac - February 14, 1870 - The Book of First Runs The West Side & Yonkers Patented Railway Company begins operation of the 9th Avenue El between Dey Street and 29th Street - 9th Avenue, there were no intermediate stations. (The line actually ended at 30th Street) Service is provided by three cable-hauled cars. The cable was subject to frequent breakdowns and on November 15, 1870 the line was closed and sold at auction. Service would resume on April 20, 1871 as a conventional steam hauled railroad.
