For whatever it's worth, I agree with you. Yesterday a WaPo blog post about a recently published study hit one of my feeds that brought to mind this thread: Why Some People Think Total Nonsense Is Really Deep

The relevant quote: "Those more receptive to bullshit are less reflective, lower in cognitive ability (i.e., verbal and fluid intelligence, numeracy), are more prone to ontological confusions [beliefs in things for which there is no empirical evidence (e.g., that prayers have the ability to heal)] and conspiratorial ideation, are more likely to hold religious and paranormal beliefs, and are more likely to endorse complementary and alternative medicine."

It wouldn't surprise me if such people are also more susceptible to scam artists and the like than those who stay firmly grounded in reality. That's not a good way to go through life.
