I can't shed any light on it because I was a little kid and my father has been dead for almost 35 years. I do remember my mother telling me that my father picked up a few pay phones near CCNY and did not hear a dial tone. I'm not sure whether in pay phones of the day, the dial tone did not come on until you put your nickel in. Of course, she might have misremembered what my father told her or I am misremembering what she told me. |
