Telephone service on the pairs that go to your phone always ran on batteries, 55 volts DC nominal. The batteries in turn were constantly under charge from commercial electric power, works the same way as a laptop does - they run off the batteries, but if it's plugged in, then the batteries never discharge fully. Hope that helps explain it. |
