He was describing things at the time of the big blackout in either 1965 or 1977. That WAS the reality then, either way. I'm responding specifically to the issue of the lights not working yet the phone still did. Modern phones with LED's don't require much current, but even then, drawing even a few milliamps from the local loop would establish a dialtone so even those need separate powering.Central office loops require that if ANY current flows through the pair, give that pair a dialtone. |
