It was quite a night. I was on my way home from Queens College. A classmate of mine suggested that we take the bus, before we actually chose to take the subway.

Our E train had R4 659 as the lead car. Now the TA, at that time, had installed new headlights on the R6s, 7s and 9s, and R4 467, but not 659 or any of the other R4s. We got a third of the way into the express tunnel west of 65th Street when the power went out. We were stuck for 5 1/2 hours before being led out. In the meantime, people peed in between the cars. I walked all the way home from where we came out the emergency exit to W. 25th Street west of 9th Avenue, where I lived at that time. The buses--even those that quit early, like the 9th & 10th Avenue--ran 24 hours. My classmate said to me, "I told you we should have taken the bus home!" But it was probably the first time--and the only time--I had ever seen a sky full of stars in New York City!
