Those BMT standards used to gather a full head of steam before the uphill climb in the 14th St. tunnel. You'd hear their gear pitch drop steadily as they labored up the grade. I remember when it got as low as B below middle C by the time the motorman cut power as we lumbered into Bedford Ave. Manhattan-bound, there is a level section east of First Ave, so it wasn't as noticeable.
