Posted by zac on Sun Sep 6 21:33:09 2015, in response to Warning! This Post is About 76th Street, posted by Mark S. Feinman on Tue Sep 1 23:34:27 2015. So I took a ride down to 76th St and Pitkin today, coming from Cross Bay on my bike and these are my observations:1. Pitkin Ave gets wider at 77th St or thereabouts when you are coming from the east. Much wider, enough for a 4 track subway underneath. Up until that point it is just an average two way street. 2. There was at least one corner building on a cross street that looks as if the adjoining building had been torn down, except that there was no room for an adjoining building, again, maybe to widen the street for a 4 track subway underneath. 3. There were some grates at Conduit that seemed out of place. 4. At Grant Ave, the grates go straight along Pitkin, even though the tracks angle off. This could also just be up to the bulkhead. 5. At 74th St the deli looks like it has a subway entrance next to it, except it isn't. 6. The bus driver behind me was getting impatient that I was looking around and not just moving. My own conclusion is that the street was at least readied for building the subway, whether anything was ever dug out is inconclusive based on what I saw. I'm sure I'm not the first person to see this. Here's a speculation though, maybe there was a coverup because they forced people out of their homes and then didn't build it. |
