Basically buses have a certain level of capacity and ridership.And subways - rapid transit have a certain level of capacity and ridership. Light rail systems generally are for situations where "something more than" a bus system is useful due to capacity and ridership issues, but also "something less than" a subway is needed. Light rail systems generally are supposed to "fill the gap" in the approaches to solving the problem of moving large numbers of people effectively to and through an urban area. That is the general idea. Of course there are ideas concerning bus rapid transit, ease of construction, route alignment and creation, costs, costs, and costs and related right of way separation issues. Mike |
