You're right. This report says 2.96 injuries per million riders and a little over 1.7 billion riders, yielding 5,054 injuries.

Still, car crashes will likely injure ~55,000 New Yorkers this year (at current rate), and those injuries are probably more severe on average than most subway injuries. The number of people hit by a train per year is somewhere around 150, with all 55,000 car coming from being hit by a car.
