Crosstown stations tend to be closer.

There are 12 essentially crosstown segments of subway in Manhattan:

1 on the J
1 on the F
4 on the L
2 on the 7
1 on the S
2 on the E
1 on the N/Q/R

Except for the S, which is 0.5 miles long (measuring from same position on each platform), all of the other segments are 0.3 to hardly more than 0.4 miles long.

The 2 eastern segments of the L are at the short end at 0.3 miles, but others are 0.3 miles also, like Lex to 5th on the E and Essex to Bowery on the J.
