You Can't Get There From Here!

Every now and then I review the listing of Weekend Service Changes on the subways. Most of the time, the service changes can be routine, expected or predictable. Often I will look over the suggested alternative trip advice, just for the heck of it.

This time, I've noticed an interesting pair of service changes, and the alternative advice given.

This weekend on the #7 line, all Times Sq-bound trains will skip the 111, 103, 90, 82, 74, 69, 52, 46, 40 and 33 Streets stations for the entire weekend, 11:45pm Friday (today) to 5 AM Monday, Jun 5 - 8, 2015. Basically all Manhattan bound trains are running express and only making express stops - not an unexpected event.

It is suggested that for riders needing to get to these stations (say from further out in Queens), to take the #7 to Junction Blvd, 61 St or Queensboro Plaza and transfer to a Flushing-bound. Basically to go past your stop to the nearest transfer point and then to come back, an expected suggestion.

It is suggested that for riders boarding these stations bound for Manhattan take the #7 to 61 St, Junction Blvd or Willets Point
and transfer to a Times Sq-bound #7-train. Again, basically go get past your stop to the nearest transfer point and then to come back, an expected suggestion.

The website also posts an "Alternate travel note" - stating there is NO Manhattan-bound service from 74 St/Roosevelt Av, and for riders to take E, F. or R trains instead. In light of the previous information given this a reasonable suggestion.

-----

This weekend for the entire weekend, F-trains leaving 179th Street and bound for Coney Island will be running via the E-line from Roosevelt Av to Canal St, then via the A-line to Jay St-MetroTech
Weekend, 11:45 PM Fri to 5 AM Mon, Jun 5 - 8, 2015. Basically the Coney Island bound F-trains will follow the E-train local train on 53rd Street and on the Eighth Avenue line, and then join the Brooklyn-bound A and C trains all using the Cranberry Street Tunnel.

Of course this means that the Queens-bound F-trains that will be following its usual standard route, and become the only service at the by-passed stations. The usual advice is to suggest that riders go past their stop to the nearest transfer point and then to come back, an expected standard suggestion. As usual there are alternative travel methods - and here's where the problem showed up.

Under the travel alternatives to GET to the 21 St-Queensbridge station the MTA suggests that riders say from further out in Queens use the Q66 and Q100 buses from the Queens Plaza station or double-back on the F-train to the Roosevelt Av for Manhattan bound F-train service. Again in light of the previous information given this a reasonable suggestion.

Under the travel alternatives to GET to the 21 St-Queensbridge station the MTA suggests that riders say from further out in Queens use the #7 train from the Roosevelt Avenue station (aka 74th Street) and take that train to 5 Av, and then transfer to a Jamaica Av-bound F train. It is standard advice to suggest another train line - EXCEPT in this case, when it is stated clearly in the #7 advisory that Manhattan-bound #7 trains are NOT stopping at 74th Street aka Roosevelt Avenue!

Reading the statement any other way becomes a confusing mass of a travel alternative. Imagine you're at 179th Street and need to get to 21 St-Queensbridge, usually by the F-train. The suggestion to change for nearby buses is reasonable. The suggestion to change at Roosevelt Avenue for a Flushing bound #7 to Junction Blvd, then to take the Manhattan-bound #7 train to Fifth Avenue to change for a Queens-bound F-train to the 21 St-Queensbridge station borders on un-reasonable advice.

Except the advice is given TWICE!

For those traveling from further out in Queens bound for the 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue station the usual given advice is to use the 59th Street-Lexington Avenue either by the E or F at 53rd Street-Lexington with a transfer to the #6 (or #4) train or to use the R-train with a transfer at Queens Plaza. Simple standard advice in light of the previous information given and a reasonable suggestion.

Then, the MTA added the suggestion for those traveling from further out in Queens bound for the 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue station of taking the F-train to the Roosevelt Avenue, then transferring to the #7 train and taking that to the 5 Av station, then transferring to a Jamaica-bound F-train to reach the 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue station. While it is standard advice to suggest another train line - EXCEPT when it is stated clearly in the #7 advisory that Manhattan-bound #7 trains are NOT stopping at 74th Street aka Roosevelt Avenue!

I'm thinking that in this case, giving the advice of changing to the #7 train at Roosevelt Avenue is not good advice to give, especially since such advice entails time-consuming around-bound trips among routes that do not fully meet. Especially where it is clear that the travel advisories for #7 train riders advise such riders to use E, F and R trains for Manhattan-bound trips BECAUSE the #7 is NOT stopping a the station!

Now why would the MTA in the next set of suggestions advise F-train riders to change for the #7 at the station where they advise 7 trains riders to use the F-train? Left-hand right-hand confusion?

Just my thoughts.
Mike
