I was recently on a Southbound D train, and noticed a few interesting things.

1: Right before entering the old two track brick tunnel after briefly entering daylight south of 36th Street, to the right of the tunnel portal that my train went in appears to be what looks like two sealed off tunnel portals. What are these? Provisions for more tracks?

Effectively bellmouths for an additional two tracks if needed for service and/or the SBK.

2: Right before exiting this same tunnel, an unused trackway comes in from the right. What was this meant for?

Ramps for 5th Avenue El trains to enter 9th Avenue without interfering with the yard (next set of ramps). They did have tracks at the beginning but they were abandoned fairly early and the 5th Avenue el trains were routed through the yard space at the north end to use the existing set of ramps.
