What I've done is set a compass to 1/2 mile according to a map scale. I then drew 1/2 mile radius circles around every subway entrance.

If you want a minimax walking distance to that station, multiply the radial distance by sqrt(2) or 1.414. That places the maximum walking distance within these circles at 0.7071 mi.
