That is a Composite, one of the original order of IRT subway cars which were made out of wood some of which had protective copper sheathing to fireproof the cars as much as possible. Eventually, wooden cars were outlawed from the subway with a very few small exceptions and the cars were modified for use on the IRT els. The cars with copper sheathing, most of which was removed for elevated operation to reduce weight gave rise to the term that IRT employees used for them which was “coppersides." |
