Quest for Kevin or other Motormen Re: Flying the Subway Express (Feb, 1938)

The article said that motormen keep the controller on the first notch while the doors are open so as soon as the doors close the train immediately starts moving. Is that a common practice and is it allowed by supervision or frowned upon.

BTW, my brother is a dispatcher for LIBus or Nice as it's called now and tells of a driver who was stopped in Flushing with the doors open for a while and didn't realize the transmission was in gear (reverse) so when he closed the doors the bus hit the bus parked behind him!!
