there is an ongoing debate regarding the usefullness of CCTV cameras.
My position was always that if they did not help or deter crime, the number of cameras in NYC would be decreasing not increasing exponentially. Today there are cameras literally everywhere. With CCTV cameras on subway cars IMHO, people will think twice about committing an infraction such as, flashing, groping, littering, dancing, panhandling, vandalizing, mugging, etc. This is because they would have no idea if a police office would be waiting for them at the next stop to arrest them or give them a summons. It is sort of like the parked NYPD car on highways in known speeding locations. The pressence of the car keeps most motorists thinking.
